How you can help

Nmoa's Board of Directors have decided through much thought and planning that the best way to support Revere Nursery School and the Community of Kissehman would be in the following ways:

Build a New School for Revere
The current one classroom structure is not sufficient to provide adequate instruction to the children. Revere needs a building that separates the different learning levels of the kids and provide adequate storage for books and supplies. Also, the teachers and director need a space to plan and organize away from the students. The new structures will also provide classroom space for adult basic education for adults in the community. The new school will also feature an arts and craft program something the school is currently lacking.

Supporting a Daily Meal Program for the Children
The director of the school feed the kids two meals daily. The meals consist of traditional Ghanaian food. This is the only meal some of the kids receive depending on their home situation. Therefore, these meals are extremely important and necessary.

The Janet Whitlow Cartledge Memorial Scholarship Fund
Ghana's public schools are free. However, families are expected to pay entrances fees and purchase a uniform. Many of families of the Revere students are not able to pay these fees or purchase the required uniform. Therefore, many of the talented students from Revere have not been able to continue their education due to the fee and uniform requirement. Nmoa's will provide scholarships to those students who are not able to pay.

Entrepreneurial Project
In order to support the continued operation of the school, Nmoa will work to establish an entrepreneurial project that will generate income for the school and serve the community as well. We are traveling to Ghana in September to begin the research and planning for the right project. We anticipate that the project will also create employment opportunities for the community.

Operating Expenses
Operating expenses includes paying teachers salaries and purchasing supplies for the lessons. These expenses range from three to four hundred US Dollars a month. Our hope is that the entrepreneurial project will eventually take care of these expenses but until that happens, it is important to support these expenses.

We will gladly accept any contribution to our mission.
You can also send books, supplies and children clothing (summer only) directly to Revere. Just remember that Ghana will charge a duty tax on all packages and it might be difficult for the director to get the package unless you help him out with duty tax.

Education
At the very foundation of Nmoa’s vision and mission statement is the commitment to make contributions to impoverished neighborhoods and communities throughout the world. Education is a key element in accomplishing this goal. We believe, in order to assist with the transformation of a neighborhood or community, these entities must have access to good education.
Illiteracy is one of the most dangerous conditions in the world that could easily be placed alongside AIDS and Cancer. Lack of education has destroyed the lives of more people than both of these deadly diseases.
Not having access to education can cripple a people and keep them stuck and hopeless for generations. Prisons, mental institutions, and the streets have become homes for countless uneducated people. We believe that every person is unique and has an innate ability to succeed. We are committed to unleashing this untapped potential by providing opportunities for a quality education.

Empowerment
It has been our experience that contributing to one’s every need, financially, does not help that person. In fact, it can make one dependent and disempowered. Nmoa’s goal is to “Teach People How to Fish.”
Millions upon millions of dollars have been dumped into systems and organizations with no substantial return on investments. It seems the more we give the more we have to give. People are not being empowered to help themselves: thus creating a vicious cycle for generations.
Nmoa will also support those organizations and those communities but you best believe we will be marching in with our Empowerment Flags. We will help create micro enterprise opportunities by partnering with other organizations who are already marching down that road. We will help create sustainable entrepreneurial opportunities that generate income and create jobs. Jobs equal money and money equals an empowered life.

Capacity Building
There are thousands of organizations operating at the grass roots level that understand their communities and the people who live in those communities. They know what’s needed and where resources should be directed. A lot of these organizations are operating in kitchens, basements and substandard facilities. These organizations make sacrifices every day. They take food off their own tables to be of service to others. They lack the capacity to grow and expand their services. We are always amazed how children will come to a classroom every day built by pieces of mixed wood, leaky roofs, no toilets, and broken down benches: conditions most would frown upon. These kids love it and they are learning. Nmoa will help these organizations build capacity to better serve their communities.
